SPACE.com Article on the SC09 Demo

Posted at 14:12 -0600

I was interviewed a few days ago by Jeremy Hsu, a freelance science writer, about the demo we did at SC09. Jeremy was directed to me by Mark Hereld, part of the team at Argonne, who also contributed to the article. It's a nice read, and does a good job of covering what was exciting about the demo, and the project overall.

SC09 Demo Coverage

This is a bit late, but I didn't want the web to forget about it. One of the cool things that came to fruition at SC09 was our work with Argonne in large-scale rendering and real time visualization using ESnet. I'll let the coverage at insideHPC go into the details.

If look at the first photo in the article, I'm standing at the end of the attendees in a black shirt. The pint glasses were from ANL, as a give away featuring one of our visualizations.

4096^3 Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Data

Packing up the booth took us 6 hours last night, and we were off the floor at 10:00 p.m. Dropped off our bags at the hotel and had dinner around 11:00 p.m. I got in bed by shortly after midnight and watched just enough TV to take my mind off of the blisters on my feet.

Long, Hard, Successful Day

Posted at 20:05 -0600 (edited 18:51)

This morning started off with a walk through a list mist to find breakfast. It's Sunday, so the streets were fairly empty. I had another light breakfast at the Bijou Cafe. I wanted to try a place called Mother's, but it wasn't open, yet, and I wanted to get to the conference center early.

Penguins in Portland!

Posted at 20:56 -0600 (edited 19:16)

Today was another very busy day, with more animals! One of the booths (Myricom) is promoting it's support for Linux, so of course they have a picture of Tux--but I've never seen a red penguin before.

There are bears in Portland!

Posted at 20:43 -0600

Today was the first day of my trip to Portland, Oregon, to attend the Supercomputing 2009 Conference as part of the San Diego Supercomputer Center. My trip has started off a little rough, since the hard drive of my laptop broke during the night. Fortunately, I backed up all of my data, and my beautiful, extremely capable wife FedEx'ed the back drive to me right away, and I'll have the data tomorrow.

My flight was quiet, but the landing was a little bumpy--and I wasn't very surprised by how cold it was in the morning. After I landed, I took the MAX Light Rail to downtown, and walked to my hotel. Imagine my surprise when I was walking down the street in Portland, and I saw a bear catching a fish! I tried to be careful as I went by, because I think this was a mama bear getting food for her cubs...

Wikipedia Maze Deserves a Shout

Posted at 00:41 -0500 (edited 7 Jul 2009, 23:57)

I got a friend request on Facebook today from Micah Martin, who must have seen my previous post about the Wikipedia Game. Micah has built a very nice site, called Wikipedia Maze, with a game similar to the one developed by Alex and Dorian, but with some nice improvements.

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations Movie

Posted at 19:42 -0500 (edited 4 Jul 2009, 00:49)

About a month or two ago, I started working with some people at the ANL Futures Laboratory on a visualization project. In the long term, this collaboration will help us to visualize the data we generate on machines like Kraken using our OptIPortal, as it's being produced. But, before we build a pipeline for rapidly visualizing potential petabytes of data, we have a backlog of other large simulations to work with.

So, our first project was to make a movie by volume rendering a simulation done as part of a DOE INCITE award, that researched the detection of baryon acoustic oscillations in the Lyman-alpha forest.
